Molecular Hydrogen as an adjunctive treatment for Covid-19 & Long Covid
Molecular hydrogen is emerging as a promising adjunctive treatment in both COVID-19 and Long-COVID. The scientific community is actively researching the potential use of molecular hydrogen in COVID-19 treatment. Several articles have highlighted the potential benefits of molecular hydrogen therapy, including its ability to combat fatigue in COVID-19 patients.
Low oxygen levels in the lungs, along with certain cells and chemicals such as cytokines, can cause inflammation and organ damage in conditions like COVID-19. Inhaling molecular hydrogen might be an effective solution to address low oxygen levels and oxidative stress, reducing the release of harmful chemicals and help address cytokine storm, reducing hypoxia, oxidative stress, and cytokine secretion.

There is also evidence that hydrogen may help reduce symptoms of Long Covid.
Potential targets of hydrogen for the treatment of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). After the viral infection, the inflammatory cells in the tissues and blood are activated to destroy the virus through phagocytosis and the release of cytokines. However, excessive inflammation causes uncontrollable body damage. In the COVID-19, hydrogen may exert its protective effect on the respiratory system by inhibiting the excessive activation of the neutrophils and macrophages and reducing the release of the cytokines.
A study was conducted on patients in the early stages of recovery. Participants received either H2 inhalation or a placebo for 14 days, and their respiratory and physical fitness were assessed using tests like the 6-minute walking test and pulmonary function tests. The results were remarkable. The H2 group showed significant improvements in distance covered during the 6-minute walking test, as well as increased lung capacity compared to the placebo group. These findings suggest that H2 inhalation can enhance both physical and respiratory function in patients recovering from COVID-19, providing a safe and effective approach to expedite recovery. A study in 2021 concluded that using inhaled hydrogen therapy with H(H2O)m as part of the recovery program for people who have survived COVID-19 is a safe and highly effective method. It helps improve symptoms like silent hypoxemia (low oxygen levels without noticeable symptoms) and endothelial dysfunction (abnormal blood vessel function), while also increasing exercise capacity.
